Returned to the Rivington with a friend for Sunday lunch today. The Rivington had been an old favourite for Sunday lunch in Shoreditch until it became annoyingly busy. The good news is that the Roast Goosnargh Chicken for two is back! This had been the best thing about the Rivington until it mysteriously disappeared off the menu about 8 months ago (may have been a seasonal change).
We skipped starters and went straight to the roast chicken. It wasn't as moist and tender as I remembered it and now comes (annoyingly) with new potatoes instead of roast potatoes. Still, the stuffing was gorgeous and so was the gravy. There is a good selection of wine by the glass (we didn't think we could finish an entire bottle!) and we ended our leisurely lunch with two decent desserts (Jelly with Elderflower Ice Cream and Shoreditch Sundae).
I have never really had a bad meal at the Rivington. Restaurants serving 'good old British food' have become something of a cliche in London in recent years but the Rivington does this extremely well. My only criticism in the past had been about the slow service at busy times. Still, the service was extremely efficient on our visit today despite the restaurant being full.
Cost of the meal was £ 45 a head. I hear that there is now a branch in Greenwich but hey! I am not trooping all the way out there.
