With the economy collapsing all around us, the obvious response is to splash out at one of London's top restaurants. The Capital is tucked away discreetly inside a small hotel just around the corner from Harrods, and has two Michelin stars. I first went there for a birthday dinner two years ago, and have been dying to go back ever since. Recovering from a horrendous overnight flight from JFK, I wasn't in the best of moods when we set off on the Piccadilly Line, but The Capital soon worked its magic and restored my spirits.
The dining hall is very small, probably one of the smallest of any fine restaurant in town. But it's quiet and sooo relaxed. The maitre d' and his staff make you feel at home right away, serving up a couple of glasses of pink champagne to ease us into the evening.
And it got better and better as the courses began to arrive. For starters I had pan-fried foie gras with cherry and
pistachio crumble, followed by Rump of Finnebrogue venison
with garniture ‘Grand Mère’. The wine was a fabulous Chateau Le Croix St Georges Bordeaux 1998 vintage, which had the richness and depth you expect from a good bottle of Pomerol. We finished off with the superb cheese board and a bottle of Inniskillin Ice Wine, our obsession for the last 18 months, since we first tasted it at the annual Landmark Hotel bash. This superb Canadian wine is still not widely available in London restaurants. You can find out more about it here.
The Capital was only about half full on the night we were there, perhaps a sign of the times. Who knows if we will be able to come back in a year's time. Isn't it fun watching your savings disappear with every downward lurch of the FTSE 100??
